HOW TO FIND SCHOLARLY BOOK REVIEWS

Example of a scholarly book review.

Reviews using History Databases

  • America: History & Life
type the book title in the first search box (the first four or five words of a title are enough)
select Book Review from Document Type (bottom left of search screen)
  • Historical Abstracts
type the title of the book in the first search box
type review article in the second search box and change the drop down box to SU Subject
  • JSTOR
      select Advanced Search
type the book title in the first search box - the first 5 or 6 words in quotes to make an exact phrase
select Review from the Limit To area

Reviews using General Databases

  • Academic OneFile (Gale InfoTrac)
type the book title or author's name in the search box
select Book Review in the Document Type limit area
  • OmniFile Full Text Mega (WilsonWeb)
type the book title or author's name in the search box
select Book Review from the Document Type drop down box
  • Research Library (ProQuest)
type the book title or the author's name in the search box
click the gray More Search Options tab to reveal limiting options
select Book Reviews from the Document Type drop down box

Other Scholarly Review Sources

  • Most of the subject databases will review books in their subject area: art, music, sociology, psychology, business, science, etc. Here is the list of databases by subject.

One good example is the database Arts & Humanities Search (FirstSearch). It is listed in the Art and Design database list.

Book Review Databases

These will not always give scholarly reviews. More likely they will be short reviews in trade journals, magazines and newspapers as opposed to scholarly journals. But they are worth a try if the other databases do not yield any results.
