GENERAL LIBRARY GUIDE

WELCOME!

This guide is intended to acquaint you with our building, departments, collections and services. The Library is equipped and staffed to provide you with all the services common to a large research library: reference, general information, bibliographic guidance and instruction, online library research databases, Internet research, interlibrary loans, audiovisual and media resources, and microformat facilities.

Staff can help you find basic information as well as lead you to sources for in-depth research. Training in use of Library electronic resources is available. Electronic indexes to articles in research journals are found in Reference. Librarians can assist you with database selection and formulation of search queries. (Print indexes are kept in the Periodicals Section, 3rd floor.)

Documents collections consist of United States government documents, Florida documents and Jacksonville documents. In addition, there is an extensive collection of maps and atlases from many government as well as private publishers.

Newspapers, magazines and journals in print and in microformat are available in Periodicals. Copy machines that copy paper as well as microfiche or microfilm are available.

Major collections include the Eartha M. M. White Papers, John E. Mathews, Jr. Papers, and Arthur N. Sollee, Sr. Papers. The Archives collection is the repository of significant University publications and records that document its history and activities.

The Access Services Department administers the circulation of library materials, media resources, course reserves, stack maintenance, interlibrary loan, and accounts receivable. In addition to specific areas of responsibility, Access Services Department staff is responsible for opening and closing the building, and monitoring adherence to house rules and the general safety and security of the building and collections.

This service provides research materials which are not available from UNF Library collections.  The resource-sharing network is nationwide and includes many of the largest research collections in North America.  Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is available to current UNF faculty, staff, and students. 

TECHNICAL SERVICES

The Technical Services Division supports the mission of the Library by acquiring, organizing, processing and preserving information in various formats. It ensures that information needed by the University community is acquired and made accessible in an efficient, cost-effective and timely manner.

Technical Services consists of three Departments: Acquisitions, Cataloging and Serials/Preservation.

Acquisitions Department

The Acquisitions Department handles the ordering and receiving of all books and media. We are also responsible for processing new materials for the shelves once they are cataloged.

The Cataloging Department has primary responsibility for organization and access to the Library's collections.

The Serials Department is responsible for the selection, ordering, receipt and cataloging of all journals, annuals, business services, electronic indexes and full text journals.

LIS1001 is a credit course designed to acquaint students with traditional library tools, such as the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, and with the latest in research technology (CD-ROM, online, and Internet, etc.).

HOUSE RULES

  1. No food or tobacco products allowed anywhere!
  2. Drinks in covered containers are permitted.
  3. No talking on cell phones; please mute ringers.
  4. Quiet! Please be considerate of others studying around you.
  5. Groups should gather in group study rooms.
  6. UNF students, faculty and staff have priority use over library services and equipment.
  7. The Library assumes no responsibility for personal property. Watch your belongings.
  8. Surveillance cameras are in use.
  9. Children must be continuously supervised by a responsbile adult. Non-UNF students under 18 years of age must be supervised by an adult, or must be referred in writing by their school principal or teacher, and register with Access Services upon arrival.
  10. Computer laws and copyright/license restrictions must be honored.
  11. No pets except trained animals working for a disabled user.
  12. Please do not reshelve books. Place them on the black shelves at the end of most shelving sections.
  13. Library fines and charges apply to ALL borrowers.
  14. Theft, emergencies, and disruptive behavior are referred to the University Police for action.
  15. During high demand periods, non-affiliated users must defer access to UNF students, faculty, and staff.

AUXILIARY SERVICES AND FACILITIES

  • Group Study Rooms - First come, first served.
  • Handicap Assistance - Request at Access Services Desk or Reference Desk.
  • Lost and Found - Kept at Access Services Desk until transfer to University Police.
  • Photocopiers - Available in alcoves by restrooms on 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. A UNF ID card or a purchased electronic debit card are required for copying. No cash services available.
  • Study Carrels - Study carrel applications are only accepted during a specific window of time. The libary will begin accepting applications two weeks before the term begins and continue through add/drop. The application will be availailable during that time from this page.
