Google Scholar, Scirus, and Windows Live Academic
for UNF Researchers
Basics
- Google Scholar lets you set library preferences so you
will see Full Text @ UNF Library when a link to full text is possible. Set
library preferences here. Google Scholar also exports
to RefWorks. Set
that option on the same library preference page.
- Academic Live does not have the option to set preferences
yet. When you are on campus, you should see @ UNF Library when a link to
full text is possible. If you are off campus you must log in to the library
first. There is a login link at the top of the search engine guide page.
- Scirus links to full text articles in ScienceDirect and other databases. UNF
will not have all of them.
- Off campus requires log in to the library to get to the full text. See
the log in link at the top of the search engine guide page.
Highlights
- Link directly to full text articles available through the Library's databases.
Look for Full-text@UNF Library.
- The Article Linker menu presents a list of options for finding
the item. You may be able to link directly to the full text.
- If full text is not available, one click searches the UNF library catalog
to see if the journal is available in print.
- If the item is a book, one click searches the UNF library catalog to see
if it is available. (This technology is still evolving.
If your results seem suspect, search
the library catalog).
- If the item is not available either electronically or in print, order it through Interlibrary Loan.
- Check to see if the journal is scholarly or refereed/peer-reviewed.
How it Works
- If you are on campus, the search engines
recognize you by Internet address. You will be able to link directly to
many full text articles with no log-in required.
- If you are off campus, you can set
your Google Scholar preferences to the UNF Library. Academic
Live and Scirus do not support setting preferences. You should
log in before searching.
Why Library Databases are More Complete
- Things you can do with library databases that you can't do
with Internet Search Engines.
- Find full text instantly, most back to the early 1990s, some
as far back as the beginning of the journal - - all
free!
- Limit by journal type -- academic/scholarly, peer-reviewed, trade journals, etc.
- Limit by document type -- book review, article, research, etc.
- Limit by date - as far back as the 1800s in some databases.
- Search in subject databases to limit to specific types of journals, such as psychology
journals, education journals, or biology journals.
- Search very specifically using descriptors and subject headings not available in Google Scholar.
- And lots more!
Need Help?
- Remember, this is brand new technology. It will not always work seamlessly. The Reference Staff is trained to provide assistance.
