What was originally a decision based on convenience turned out to be much more for Donna Rawlins, coordinator of Auxiliary Services.
Rawlins was hired in 1972 by then Bookstore Manager Marty Weitsen, when the bookstore was located in a small building at the back of the Florida Chamber of Commerce Building on the Arlington Expressway. At the time she was working as a textbook secretary at Florida Junior College (now FCCJ) and had previously worked at Middle Tennessee State College in Murfreesboro, Tenn., and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
When Rawlins accepted the position with UNF, she also had received a job offer at Jones College. "Since I lived in the south side of town, I wanted to work closer to where I lived, rather than travel all the way to Blanding Boulevard."
Rawlins was quickly promoted to bookstore manager and remained in that position until 1991. One of the highlights of her tenure at UNF was when, under her management, the UNF Bookstore received national recognition from the National Association of College Stores. The operation underwent a thorough evaluation to become accredited. Rawlins now manages the Ticket Box Office and the ID Card Office.
As she looks back, Rawlins says the decision to come to UNF was probably one of the best she has ever made. "I have enjoyed seeing the campus grow from the ground up, building by building. UNF is an exciting place to work."
