Vero Beach • Political Science

I didn’t realize how much I enjoyed the world of politics until I became involved in Student Government at the University of North Florida.

I was appointed to the Student Senate to fill a vacancy and then ran for the seat in subsequent campus elections. We campaigned from early in the morning until late at night. Although I didn’t end up winning, the experience was great because I got to meet so many people. Politics are not for everyone, but it was a transformational experience for me.

My involvement in Student Government played a role in my decision to pursue a degree in political science. After graduating, I plan to go to graduate school — perhaps at UNF — and then maybe work for a non-profit community organization. My experience at UNF has convinced me it’s the type of work I would enjoy doing.

I really didn’t know much about UNF when I was a senior at Vero Beach High School. But when I visited the campus I knew this was where I wanted to go to school.  The staff here was so energetic and warm. I visited several other state universities, but I knew this was where I belonged.

As for political science classes, you can tell the faculty love what they do and you can see it in the way they teach. They engage students in conversations about relevant issues in the news.

Another aspect of UNF I appreciate is the help I’ve received through the Pathways to Success Scholarship program. I’m the first in my family to attend college and because of that I know I’m setting an example for the rest of my family.  Now the rest of my family can see my success and know that college is a possibility for them. The Pathways counselors made such a difference to me. They kept up with me and made sure I was doing okay. They are genuinely concerned about me.

That’s really one thing that stands out about UNF. Because it’s a smaller university, you’re able to get to know more people and establish closer relationships. I was really dreading my first year here because I didn’t know anyone. But it was a great experience. Many of the friends I’ve met here have become like an extended family to me.

There are so many opportunities to get involved in activities here at UNF. My advice to anyone new to UNF is simple: get out and get involved.
