The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Resource Center at the University of North Florida is sponsoring several LGBT campus events during the month of November, including a Transgender Day of Remembrance and a screening of the documentary, “Austin Unbound.” Both events will take place at UNF Wednesday, Nov. 16, and are free and open to the public.
Transgender Day of Remembrance: The event starts at 7 p.m. on the Student Union Osprey Plaza and will include a vigil, reading of names and a celebration of life. Transgender artists and photographers are encouraged to submit work to display during the event. The Transgender Day of Remembrance is set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in November 1998 has yet to be solved.
Austin Unbound: The UNF LGBT Resource Center, in partnership with OASIS, the GLBT Resource Center of Northeast Florida, and the UNF Disability Resource Center, will present the documentary “Austin Unbound.” The screening will start at 8 p.m. in Building 39, Brooks Hall, Room 1016. Parking will be available in the Arena parking garage. For information about the documentary, visit http://austinunbound.org/.
Film producer Eliza Greenwood and Austin Richie will be available following the screening to discuss the documentary. Richie was born deaf and knew that from the age of three, his female anatomy didn’t fit him. “Austin Unbound” documents a pivotal time for Richie as he moves through a milestone in his gender transition—preparing for a double mastectomy.
For more information about the events, contact the UNF LGBT Resource Center at (904) 620-5197 or at unflgbt@unf.edu.
