The University of North Florida’s Intercultural Center for PEACE and Interfaith Center will host an International Day of Peace celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Student Union Osprey Plaza on campus.
Established by a United Nations resolution in 1981, the International Day of Peace, or better known as “Peace Day,” provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. Organizations from the University and Jacksonville community will share their ways of building a culture of peace through music, education, health, volunteerism and art.
Among the participants will be Hands on Jacksonville, putting together peace bracelets to distribute to those that need a reminder there is peace, love and beauty in the world. Other community organizations involved in the annual peace event will be One Jax, Women’s Center of Jacksonville and the ACLU of Florida as well as various UNF clubs and departments.
Children who attend the UNF Child Development Research Center will open the event with a song of peace, while students in the University’s English Language Program will form a human peace sign at noon on Osprey Plaza. Additionally, the Intercultural Center for PEACE will host an art contest and participants will have the opportunity to paint their concept of peace. Winners will be displayed in the Intercultural Center for PEACE office on campus.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Chris Bender at (904) 620-2475.
