UNF World-Wide Online Literary Journal Releases Latest Issue

Fiction Fix, the literary journal of the University of North Florida, has released its ninth issue online at www.fictionfix.net. This special issue of the world-wide journal focuses on the art of creative nonfiction, including 12 beautifully-crafted works.  

“Creative nonfiction is about truth. All art is about that, but the writer of creative nonfiction takes a peculiar stand. She makes a promise. This is real, she says. She puts aside façade and speaks directly to her reader from the bottom of her heart by any means necessary,” said Fiction Fix guest editor Mark Ari, a creative writing faculty member at UNF. “Author and reader suspend disbelief in one another in a joined play of the mind. It is intimate. Often brave. And while it’s factual, it’s never, ever, just the facts. That just wouldn’t be real.” 

In “Leaving and Letting Go,” Geri Lipschulz, a current doctoral candidate at Ohio University, dissects the mystery of memory, while searching for closure in the kidnapping and murder of a childhood acquaintance. She has published work in The New York Times, College English, Kalliope, Black Warrior Review and others. In “No Means No,” by Chris McCann, who lives and writes in Minneapolis, an estranged father and son attempt a friendship that seems, at times, tragic and doomed, and at other times comical and warm.  

Artworks by four artists appear in the current issue, including documentary-inspired portraits by New York-based international photographer Matthew Asselin; selections from “I Think We’re UnderThe Illusion We’re Doomed,” a book of graphic works by UNF graduates Robbie Knopf and Justin Toole; and other-worldly prints by writer and artist Alexis Wilson, also an alum of the University. 

Fiction Fix was founded by Ari, also an author, musician and artist, and UNF students in 2002. Its current and fourth editor-in-chief is UNF graduate April Bacon. The journal promotes contemporary fiction from national as well as international authors and artists and is based on the premise that stories are an addictive experience.  

Each fall, Fiction Fix remains true to its roots, publishing a full fiction issue. Each spring, the journal publishes an issue around a special topic, such as this spring’s “Creative Nonfiction” issue. Its editorial board is comprised solely of UNF students and alumni who are participants in a unique and far reaching literary community.
