The University of North Florida’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) will host a fall Back-to-School Open House and Registration event Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the UNF University Center, located near J. Turner Butler and Kernan boulevards. The event is free, but registration is required.
The fall term begins Tuesday, Sept. 26, and offers more than 70 courses, which run from one to 15 sessions, ranging in cost from free to $85. Most courses are between four and six sessions and are priced between $20 and $45. UNF OLLI offers courses on campus at the University Center and at three partner sites, including Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, Glenmoor at World Golf Village and Westminster Woods on Julington Creek.
The fall schedule includes the following courses:
- Twenty-four courses in the areas of creativity, arts and culture, including “Legends of Jazz,” “Writing Personal Poetry,” “Discover the World of Vincent Van Gogh,” “The Movies—Three Genres” and “Travels with Ginny.”
- Seventeen courses in the areas of humanities and languages, including “Dante: The Politician, The Poet, The Man,” “Chaucer’s Pilgrims as Storytellers,” “Thomas Jefferson: His Life and His World,” “The Modern Women’s Movement: Exploring Its Accomplishments and Its Unfinished Work” and “TRU: Truman Capote in His Own Words” to name a few.
- Seventeen courses on contemporary issues and world affairs, including “Perspectives on National Security: Intelligence,” “Anatomy of a Business Failure: ENRON” and “A View of the Criminal Justice System.”
- Twelve courses on computer and technology, including “Facebook Explained,” “iPhone: Beginning and Intermediate” and “Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop.”
“I like UNF OLLI because I enjoy being with seasoned adults who seek intellectual, social and cultural activities to satisfy their curiosity, nourish their spirit and connect with others in this wonderfully successful community of lifelong learners,” said Billie Hayward, OLLI president.
OLLI is a membership organization for seasoned adults age 50 and older in Northeast Florida. Membership is $45 and renewed annually. Members have access to an array of courses in a fun environment with no tests or grades, social events and out-of-classroom “EDventures” year round. Additionally, members have access to UNF’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library and receive campus discounts.
