Junior Christina King cleared a height of 12-6 1/4 in the pole vault, setting a new school record as the women’s track and field wrapped up day one of the North Florida Invitational at Hodges Stadium on Friday night.
King cleared a personal-best and school record height of 12-6 1/4 in the pole vault, which should qualify her for the NCAA East Region Championships. King bettered her former best by 3/4 of an inch and bested the former school record of 12-5 1/2 set in 2010 by Ann Delbovo.
In addition, sophomore Jennifer Smyth leaped her way to a career-best and school record mark of 18-7 3/4 (1.6) to finish ninth, breaking the former record of 18-7 set earlier this year by Jasmine Jackson. Jackson actually jumped further than Smyth, finishing eighth with a leap of 18-10 (2.0) but her mark was wind-aided so it does not count for records.
In the 1,500 meters, junior Erin Nixon finished first with a time of 4:35.16, which was not enough to move her into contention for a spot at the region meet.
Sophomore Meggie Emons turned in a time of 17:40.65 to finish second in the 5,000 meters, just missing her personal-best mark of 17:39.98.
The meet will commence from Hodges Stadium on Saturday at noon (ET) with the field events, while running events will begin at 2 p.m. The final event, the 4x400 meter relay, is slated to start at 4:35 p.m.
