Environmental Center Participates in National RecycleMania Competition
UNF Increases Average Percentage of Recovered Recycled Material
The Environmental Center at the University of North Florida will kick off the start of RecycleMania Monday, Feb. 7, with an inter-residence hall recycling competition in an effort to increase recycling and overall waste reduction on campus.
This is the third consecutive year the University has participated in RecycleMania, an ongoing 10-week friendly competition between colleges and universities nationwide, but it’s the first time the University has had a formal competition between residence halls. The winning residence hall will be rewarded with a party and free showing of the environmental documentary “No Impact Man.”
“RecycleMania is essential,” said Dr. Radha Pyati, director of UNF’s Environmental Center. “It gets every student a chance to think about how to reduce their everyday trash, and how to do it better than their peers, in other residence halls and at other universities.”
UNF students will compete with each other weekly, as well as other colleges and universities, by tracking and calculating how much recycling is produced per student resident. The amount of trash and recyclables produced each week on campus will be available on the RecycleMania website at http://www.unf.edu/ecenter/Recyclemania.aspx.
Since the University started participating in the competition two years ago, UNF has continually seen an increase in its average percentage of recycled material recovered. In 2009, the average was 11.8 percent, increasing to 17.5 percent last year. The University increased the percent of recycled material diverted from the landfill by approximately six percent.
The goal of the recycling competition is to motivate the campus community to reduce wasteful practices and improve recycling behaviors. Each school registered reports on their waste and recycle practices in different categories to rank themselves among peer schools. UNF is registered in the waste minimization category, which encourages overall waste reduction, not just increasing recycling.
The RecycleMania Competition is a project of the College and University Recycling Council governed by a steering committee, which is responsible for setting the rules and structure of the competition, as well as looking after its long term-strategic planning. Committee members are typically professionals involved with waste reduction and sustainability issues on college campuses.
