University of North Florida golfer Kevin Aylwin
became the third Osprey to qualify for the upcoming U.S. Amateur Championship
after finishing second in the qualifier event held Monday and Tuesday at the
Orange County National Golf Center.
A rising junior at UNF from New Smyrna Beach, Fla.,
Aylwin finished with a two-day total 138 at the qualifying event. During the
2009-10 season, he participated in nine tournaments for the Ospreys earning
three Top 25 individual finishes. He fired a season low round 68 on the final
day of the Golden Ocala Collegiate.
Aylwin joins teammates Sean Dale, an earlier qualifier
this summer at Sawgrass Country Club, and Kevin Phelan, who got into the field
after qualifying and participating in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. This marks
the first time for three UNF golfers to participate in the same U.S. Amateur
Championship.
The U.S. Amateur Championship is the oldest event hosted
by the United States Golf Association (USGA) with former champions including the
likes of Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods
and Justin Leonard. The 2010 U.S. Amateur is being held Aug. 23-29 at Chambers
Bay (par 71/7,742 yards) in University Place, Wash.
