University of North Florida sophomore golfer Kevin Phelan played for Team Ireland at the World Amateur Team Championship held Oct. 28-31 at the Olivos and Buenos Aires Golf Clubs in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A native of Waterford, Ireland, Phelan helped lead the Irish squad to a sixth-place finish with a tournament total 439. Phelan earned a tie for 24th in individual medalist play at 223, after carding rounds of 76 (at Olivos) and 75-72 (at BAGC).

The World Team Championship featured 69 teams of three players competing for 54 holes on two courses over three days. The two best individual scores each day made up the team score for the round. The Buenos Aires GC boasted a par 72, 6,962-yard layout while Olivos GC played to a par 71 over 6,801 yards.

France captured the team crown with a 423 final score with Denmark (427), United States (428), New Zealand (435) and Scotland (436) rounding out the Top Five teams. Denmark’s Joachim Hansen was the individual medalist finishing with a six-under 209.

Phelan and the rest of his UNF teammates are off from collegiate competition for the winter and will return to action Jan. 31, 2001, at the JU Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach.
