University of North Florida Director of Athletics
Lee Moon announced the addition of women’s golf as a Division I athletic
program, increasing the number of varsity sports sponsored by the University to
18.
“We are
excited about adding women’s golf into the family of Osprey sports,” said Moon.
“We feel like women’s golf is a perfect fit for our athletic program at this time,
especially with the success that our men’s golf program has enjoyed recently.
Our location, the ability to play year round and our facilities give us an
immediate advantage in not only attracting a strong coach but also in drawing
top-notch golf prospects interested in competing at the highest level.”
The women’s
golf program is slated to begin NCAA competition during the 2012-13 season. A
national search to identify a head coach is scheduled for spring 2011, while
the 2011-12 season will be utilized for recruiting, scheduling and player
development.
The UNF men’s
golf team turned in one of the best season’s in program history in 2009-10earning
13 top-10 finishes, including 11 top-5 and eight top-3 showings. The Ospreys,
who ranked in the top 25 nationally all season, captured a pair of tournament
titles and qualified for the NCAA Championships where they finished 14th out of
30 teams.
UNF also swept
the postseason honors for the A-Sun Conference, including All-American Sean
Dale (Player of the Year), Kevin Phelan (Freshman of the Year) and Scott
Schroeder (Coach of the Year).
With the
addition of women’s golf at UNF, the Atlantic Sun Conference will have full
participation of its member institutions in that sport.
