Health Care Leader-Advocate Featured Speaker at Annual UNF Luncheon

The University of North Florida’s Us Group will feature Dr. Nancy Dickey, the first female President of the American Medical Association (AMA) and breast cancer survivor, at its annual educational luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, at the UNF University Center. She will discuss “Health Matters for Women.” Check-in and registration begins at 10:45 a.m.

Dickey is currently the president of the Texas A & M Health Science Center and vice chancellor for Health Affairs, Texas A & M System. Although she will be discussing a number of different topics, the thrust of her presentation will be empowerment: the impact of individual health care decision-making, the relationship between women and their health care providers, and the direction our health care system is leading us.

In 1997, when Dickey was elected the first president of the American Medical Association, her first recommendation was a proposed patient’s bill of rights, not surprising from a physician who spent many years working in family practice medicine but who also has been deeply involved in redefining and reshaping medical care in the United States.

She is known for her commitment to community service and medical leadership. Before her election as president of the AMA, she served as the chair of the Board of Trustees and headed the AMA’s Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs. She chaired the Texas Medical Association’s Patient-Physician Advocacy Committee and is active in both the American and Texas Academy of Family Physicians.

Dickey is widely published, has appeared before Congress and is the recipient of numerous citations in The Best Doctors in America and Best Doctors publications. She received her M.D. and residency training at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. She then built and maintained an active family medicine practice and is the past program director of the Family Practice Residency of the Brazos Valley.

Tickets for this event are $50 per person ($25 tax deductible)or $500 for sponsored tables of 10 ($250 tax deductible). Sponsorship opportunities as well as exhibitor tables are still available. Participants don’t have to be a member of the Us group to attend the luncheon; however, a special opportunity to join is offered at a reduced price of $40 with the purchase of a $50 luncheon ticket.

The purpose of the Us Group is to support the programs of UNF’s Brooks College of Health and to provide targeted women and girls health education to the greater Jacksonville community. The group aims to motivate, educate and engage individuals in the strengthening and delivery of excellence in women and girls’ health care.
