University of North Florida percussionist and music professor Dr. Charlotte Mabrey will host “An Evening of 20th Century Music” at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26, in the Fine Arts Center Lazzara Performance Hall on the UNF campus.

Mabry will open the concert with Ney Rosauro’s “Cenas Amerindias.” The first movement, Brasiliana, uses all wooden instruments, including the marimba, bamboo wind chimes, temple blocks and wood blocks. It was written as a homage to the city of Brasilis, containing very symmetric structures that are directly related to the strong geometric shapes in which the city was built. The second movement, Eldorado, uses only metal instruments such as the vibraphone, four cymbals, cowbell, triangle and the ever popular crotale. Eldorado depicts man’s dream and the crazy search for the magic of gold.

Other featured musical pieces include “Funketude” by Bruce Hamilton and “Marubatoo” by John Wyre. “Funketude” is a percussion solo performed by Mabry and uses several drums and cymbals, stating a rhythmical theme that is elaborated on and brought back to its original form. “Marubatoo” will be performed by Kristen Hampton, Simion Fabian, Matt Wardell and Will Hall. This musical piece weaves three marimbas, vibe and crotales into a dreamy ever-changing sound piece, reflecting the compositional influence of minimalism but without any of the boredom!

Wardell and Mabrey will be featured in a duet titled “Tricks” by Rupert Kettle. This piece uses several instruments as well as a fancy performance path, which involves moving from station to station in a slow game of “catch.” For the grand finale, Mabry will be joined by Robert Arleigh White, executive director of the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville, in an original work titled, “Which Way?” This piece explores the different ways life and its challenges might be met as we all struggle at one time or another.

Tickets for this event are $10. UNF students are admitted for free. All proceeds go towards the UNF Percussion Scholarship Fund. For more information or to order tickets, go to www.unf.edu/FineArtsCenter or call (904) 620-2878.
