Author/Professor Discusses the Global Struggle over Energy

Author and Professor Michael T. Klare will discuss “Oil, War and Geopolitics: The Global Struggle over Energy” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, at the University Center Board of Trustee Room on the University of North Florida campus.

Klare is a five college professor of Peace and World Security Studies, a joint appointment at Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, as well as director of the Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies, a position he has held since 1985. Before assuming his present position, he served as director of the Program on Militarism and Disarmament at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C.

He has written widely on U.S. defense policy, the arms trade and world security affairs. His most recent book is “Blood and Oil: The Dangers and Consequences of America’s Growing Dependency on Imported Petroleum.” He has also authored numerous other books including, “The New Landscape of Global Conflict,” “Rogue States and Nuclear Outlaws,” “American Arms Supermarket,” “Supplying Repression” and “War Without End: American Planning for the Next Vietnams” In addition, he has contributed articles to Arms Control Today, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Harper's, International Security, Issues in Science and Technology, Journal of International Affairs, Le Monde Diplomatique, Mother Jones, Scientific American, Technology Review, Third World Quarterly and World Policy Journal.

Klare serves on the board of directors of the Arms Control Association and the advisory board of the Arms Division of Human Rights Watch, plus he serves as a member of the Committee on International Security Studies of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Columbia University and his doctorate from the Graduate School of the Union Institute.
