Ambassador Discusses China as an Emerging Giant

Ambassador J. Stapleton Roy, managing director of Kissinger Associates, Inc., will speak about “China: The Emerging Giant,” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15, at the University Center on the University of North Florida campus. This lecture is co-hosted by UNF and the World Affairs Council.

Roy retired from the Foreign Service in January 2001, after a 45-year career with the U.S. Department of State. Most of his career was spent in East Asia, where his assignments included Bangkok, Honk Kong, Beijing, Singapore and Jakarta. Specializing in Soviet affairs, Roy also worked in Moscow at the height of the Cold War.

He became a three-time ambassador, serving as the top U.S. envoy in Singapore, the People’s Republic of China and Indonesia. In 1996, Roy was promoted to the rank of Career Ambassador, the highest rank in the Foreign Service, with his final post being assistant secretary for Intelligence and Research with the State Department. He later joined Kissinger Associates, Inc., a strategic consulting firm, as managing director. In 2001, Roy received Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson Award for Distinguished Public Service.

Roy is a director of ConocoPhillips and Freeport McMoRan Copper&Gold. He serves as chairman of the Council for the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies, chairman of the International Advisory Council of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies of the Brookings Institution and chairman of the United States Asia Pacific Council. He is a vice chairman of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, a trustee of The Asia Foundation and on the boards of Gifts in Kind International, the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy of Georgetown University, the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs. In addition, Roy is a distinguished senior adviser to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC.
