JACKSONVILLE – Humans express anxiety over “the End” in many ways, from art to religion to science, and Dr. Marcelo Gleiser will explore the connections among these forms during a lecture Thursday, March 4.
Gleiser will speak on “The Prophet and the Astronomer: Science and Religion Confront the End of Time” at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of UNF’s Fine Arts Center. The lecture will address how apocalyptic ideas influence today’s science. The Distinguished Voices Lecture Series event is free.
According to Gleiser, scientists have a duty to take their research to the public. Gleiser says he does this through his books and public lectures.
Gleiser is the Appleton Professor of Natural Philosophy and a professor of physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College. He is the author of “The Prophet and the Astronomer,” which won Brazil’s 2002 Jabuti Award for best science book. Gleiser also won the 1998 Jabuti Award for his first book, “The Dancing Universe: From Creation Myths to the Big Bang.” He has participated in several TV documentaries, including “Stephen Hawking’s Universe.”
