JACKSONVILLE – Episcopal High School was the victor in a close match with Nease High School in the Florida Region Botball 2004 Tournament on March 13 at the University of North Florida.

Episcopal took the win when the Nease team’s robot crashed to the floor in the final round. In all, 11 area middle and high schools participated in the tournament. Fletcher High School placed third in the event.

Top teams in the regionals are invited to participate in the National Botball Tournament, which will be in San Jose, Calif., in late July. Last year, Mayport Middle School’s team placed 10th and was selected rookie team of the year.

The regional tournament was the final event in a six-week educational robotics program featured in 13 regions across the country. The program provides students and teachers with the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art robotics equipment not usually available to pre-college students.

The competition tests students’ ability to design autonomous robots that demonstrate performance and survival capabilities in the context of a Botball game format. A team’s overall score includes tournament performance and the quality of online documentation the team has prepared.

The Florida region has been hosted by UNF since 1997 under the sponsorship of the College of Computing, Engineering and Construction.

Botball Educational Robotics Programs are presented by the KISS Institute for Practical Robotics, a nonprofit organization dedicated to linking people and technology through robotics. For information, visit www.kipr.org.
