JACKSONVILLE -- Noted author and educator Dr. Cornel West will be the featured speaker at the University of North Florida’s 23rd annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Luncheon on Thursday, Feb. 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom of the University Center on the UNF campus.
West, who is a professor of religion at Princeton University, has written a number of ground-breaking books, such as Race Matters, Restoring Hope, The American Evasion of Philosophy, Jews and Blacks: Let the Healing Begin and The War Against Parents. In his latest book, The Cornel West Reader, he discusses the growing divisions in American society and how it fosters the despair and distrust that undermines the democratic process.
Prior to his position at Princeton, West was a professor at Harvard University teaching Afro-American Studies and the Philosophy of Religion. He received his undergraduate training at Harvard University and his master's degree and doctorate from Princeton University. He also has taught at Yale and Union Theological Seminary.
Tickets for the luncheon are $35 for individuals; $14 for UNF students; and $400 for a table of eight. Tickets are available at the UNF Ticket Box Office. Proceeds from the event will be used for scholarships.
The event is sponsored by the President's Office, Student Affairs, the Intercultural Center for PEACE and the Black History Committee.
