Each week we prepare a “TIP SHEET” for Jacksonville-area media highlighting events and activities of interest to the community. UNF plans Hispanic Heritage Events

The Hispanic Council is planning two events in connection with National Hispanic Heritage week.

The events will be Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Andrew Robinson Student Life Center, Rooms 1603-06, 1700, beginning at 1 p.m. A panel of local experts will discuss whether there is a resurgence of leftist ideologies in Latin America. Panel members include Dr. Ana Yolanda Contreras, Department of Language and Literature, who will discuss Guatemala; Dr. Martin Camps, Department of Language and Literature, who will discuss Mexico; Dr. David Schwam-Baird, Department of Political Science and Public Administration, who will discuss Brazil; and Eduardo Naval, owner and president of Naval and Associates Inc., who will discuss Cuba. The panel moderator will be Dr. Jose Angeles, Department of English and Foreign Languages.

At 4 p.m. the Hispanic Showcase of Dance and Food will begin with a variety of entertainment and refreshments.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Irish Poetry Featured at UNF

Kerry Hardie will read from her poetry and sign books Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. in the Robinson Little Theatre, Building 14, Room 1700. The event, part of the John Francis Reilly Irish Studies Performance and Lecture Series, is free and open to the public.

Hardie was born in Singapore and grew up in County Down, Northern Ireland. She worked as a researcher and radio interviewer for the BBC in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, which fueled a fascination with “people who found themselves in a hard place and with how they reacted to this place.” She has three published collections of poetry . “A Furious Place,” “Cry for the Hot Belly” and “The Sky Didn’t Fall” . and she published her first novel, “A Winter Marriage,” in 2000. Her appearance at UNF is sponsored by Hibernia.

County Fairs Persist, But Why?

The Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair is Oct. 15-26, yet Jacksonville has moved away from agriculture. How do these county fairs continue in the face of urban growth?
