Archbishop Tutu to Speak at MLK Scholarship Luncheon

The University of North Florida will present the 22nd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Luncheon, featuring Nobel Peace Prize winner and international human rights advocate, Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu, on Friday, February 21st, from noon to 2 p.m., at the University Center, 12000 Alumni Drive.

The University of North Florida and The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) Jacksonville Region are sponsoring this event.

Tutu, archbishop emeritus, of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Town, South Africa, is considered among the most preeminent of living human right advocates today. He was instrumental in leading South Africa through its transition from apartheid and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work in 1984. After retiring as archbishop of the Anglican Diocese of Cape Town in 1996, he was appointed chairperson of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission by President Nelson Mandela and presided over the traumatic revelation of the secrets of apartheid.

For three decades, Tutu has led human and civil rights campaigns and served as an unofficial human rights ambassador. He has received numerous awards, citations and honorary degrees around the world. He is the author of several books, the most recent being, “No Future Without Forgiveness.” Tutu has served as a visiting scholar in residence for several universities in the United States, including this year at the University of North Florida.

Luncheon tickets are $30 for individuals, $15 for students, and $400 for corporate tables of eight seats. Ticket prices include a donation to the scholarship fund, which is tax-deductible.
