Good Question!
Q:
From Janice Williams Donaldson (Regional Director, Small Business Development Center): Over the past few weeks, I have noticed three cars booted in the designated parking area in front of the Library. Since these spaces are so limited, what’s the rationale for booting a car in these spaces and having it sit there taking up a spot for however long it takes the owner to respond? Wouldn’t it make sense to tow violators from these scarce spots rather than booting them?
A:
From Vince Smyth (Director, Auxiliary Services): I understand your frustration with seeing a booted car taking up a prime parking space. However, the University does not have the authority to tow a car just because it has received multiple tickets or bootings, or if it is parked in a designated space. The Board of Trustees' approved regulation only allows the University to tow a car in certain situations, such as when a car is blocking traffic, creating a hazard, involved in a crime or illegally parked in a disability parking space. When a car is booted for other reasons, the same regulation says the University must wait at least 20 days before towing it.
