State of Florida Matching Gift Programs
Major gifts to the University of North Florida can be leveraged dramatically through UNF's participation in the state's higher education matching gift program.
The State of Florida has three matching gift programs in support of major donations to UNF and other state universities in Florida.
- The Major Gifts Matching Program matches gifts for endowment of $100,000 or more at a rate of 50 percent or more, depending on the size of the gift.
- The Capital Facilities Matching Program matches all gifts to qualifying construction or renovation projects on a dollar-for-dollar basis, regardless of the size of each individual gift.
- The University of North Florida participates in Florida's First Generation Matching Grant Program. Hundreds of UNF students have been awarded First Generation scholarships thanks to UNF fundraising efforts and appropriations from the Florida Legislature. The Major Gifts Matching Program
The Major Gifts Matching Program provides matching funds to gifts for endowments over $100,000 for academic purposes from a single donor. The rate of match depends of the amount of the gift. The rate of matches for different levels of gifts is described in the following table:
| Amount of Gift | Match Percentage | |
|---|---|---|
| At Least | Not More Than | |
| $100,000 | $599,999 | 50% |
| $600,000 | $1,000,000 | 70% |
| $1,000,001 | $1,500,000 | 75% |
| $1,500,001 | $2,000,000 | 80% |
| $2,000,001 or more | 100% | |
For example, a gift of $100,000 to endow a scholarship qualifies for a 50% match, which, when added to the corpus of the endowment, creates a scholarship fund of $150,000. With a gift of $600,000, a 70% match of $420,000 creates an endowment of more than $1,000,000. Gifts in excess of $2 million receive a dollar-for-dollar match.
In some cases, gifts of less than $100,000 may also qualify for a match, as long as they are combined with other gifts for the same purpose and the total of all gifts reaches $100,000. Such "bundled" gifts of multiple donors to a single endowment fund can be matched at a rate of 50%, up to a maximum of $500,000.
The Capital Facilities Matching Program
The Capital Facilities Matching Program matches private gifts to approved construction and renovation projects at the University. All private gifts to these special projects are matched dollar-for-dollar, regardless of the amount of each gift. Private gifts must total at least one-half the total project, and all private funds must be in hand before matching funds are released for the project.
