SUPPORT SERVICES COMMITTEE
Annual Report
2008-2009
Submitted by Dr. Kristine Web, Co-Chair

The Support Services Committee is responsible for evaluating and recommending policies, procedures, regulations, practices, and information dissemination concerning support services for faculty at the University.

This 2008-2009 report contains a synopsis of the Support Services Committee’s deliberations and action items submitted to the Association; the status of work in progress; and any issues to be addressed in 2009-2010 or beyond.

Deliberations

Defining and Revising the Charge of the Committee- The Committee spent several months reviewing the Committee description as presently stated in Faculty Association bylaws.  Committee members recommended an updated version of this Committee’s charge and description would assist Committee members in identifying and progressing committee work.

After several revisions and suggestions from the Executive Committee and Faculty Association, the final description was adopted.

The Support Services Committee shall act as a liaison or conduit between the UNF faculty and those departments that offer support to them; review and make needed recommendations regarding the practices and regulations concerning campus support services; disseminate information concerning support services; seek regular input from leaders in Auxiliary Services (e.g., parking, bookstore, ID cards, food services); Center for Instruction & Research Technology; Library; Academic Center for Excellence; Human Resources (benefits); Physical Facilities; and other support departments.

Information Dissemination about Support Services

During the 2009-10 academic year, the Committee met with UNF support professionals, summarized information from these meetings, and posted information within monthly Committee meeting minutes, and shared information during monthly Faculty Association meetings.

We met each semester with Vince Smyth, Director of Auxiliary Services, who updated the Committee on critical issues such as parking, new facilities on campus, time lines, ID cards, and other Auxiliary Services.  Mr. Smyth provided information on the new Student Union, Duplicating services, food services, credit union, shuttles, and postal services.

Mr. Gary Clay, Assistant Director of Environmental Health and Safety was a speaker at the April meeting, and he shared information about faculty responsibilities concerning safety, student assistance, emergency evacuation procedures, and training opportunities for emergency evacuation chairs found in each building.

Mr. Tully Burnett, Auxiliary Services, communicated with the group about the Osprey1 card questions and concerns about placing cash on the cards in the library, a process that is planned for summer 2009. UNF plans to place at least one cash-to-card machine in the library and perhaps one other such machine on campus.

A faculty member contacted the Committee about problems those who teach film courses in 51/1209 have with the controlling the lighting in the room. Co-Chair Krusienski contacted Physical Facilities, who contacted the person who made the request to the committee.  Although something was done to help the professor, it was a temporary fix, not a permanent solution.  The Committee made recommendations to Vince Smyth about this issue.
