RESEARCH COMMITTEE
Annual Report
2011-2012
Submitted by Dr. Caroline Guardino

The Committee’s primary charge is to evaluate submitted research proposals and to recommend to the provost a portion of these proposals for funding. The Committee received and reviewed 51 proposals. Proposals receiving a score of ≥ 4.39 were funded (n = 24, 47% of submitted proposals). Of those funded, 5 aligned with the University’s Diversity mission, and 4 aligned with UNF’s CBTL initiative. All colleges were represented within the funded proposals.

In addition to the work stated above, The Committee met with the Provost to gather input on proposed editorial revisions to the request for proposal (RFP) and application. The revised RFP and application were submitted to Academic Affairs for approval on April 27, 2012. The suggested revisions included:

1.
Removal of verbiage for hardcopies of the proposal to be submitted, instead The Committee wishes to have a completely paperless submission process.
2.
The previous RFP encouraged applications from “newer faculty”. This verbiage was changed to “junior (assistant)” faculty.
3.
Rather than solicit outsider reviewers, the review process will be completed by the committee members. Each application will be randomly assigned to two committee members. Committee members will be required to provide feedback. The Committee hopes that this will eliminate instances in the past where comments were minimal and outside reviews were not completed on time.
4.
Additional criteria evaluation criteria were added:
a.
Is this a new project?
b.
Is the project a junior faculty member?
c.
Is it written so faculty members from other disciplines can understand the proposal during the review process?
d.
Is the applicant currently funded for the project?  If so, has the applicant explained why the research grant is critical in advancing the project?

The Committee worked conscientiously over the spring 2012 semester to suggest changes that would improve (1) the quality of proposals, (2) the review process, and (3) the equitability of application process.
