Introductory Remarks/Old Business

  • For reference: Recommend # to be funded from previous cycle
  •
  • 2012 recommendation was: “The Research Committee strongly recommends that all proposals receiving an average score of ≥ 4.39 be funded (n = 24, 47% of submitted proposals).”
  •
    III.
    New Business/Agenda Items/Information Reports

  • 59 proposal submitted, 2 removed
  •
  • 1-email from applicant that wants us to reconsider:
  •
  • See email chain below
  •
  • The committee voted unanimously not to reconsider the proposal for review. However, the committee encourages this applicant to resubmit next year.
  •
  • Review proposal scores
  •
  • Vote on survey item 10
“For those projects that already have external funding, the applicant explains why an additional summer grant is critical to the advancement of this project.”
  •
  • Concerns noted on survey item 9
  •
  • We recalculated the initial scores after removing 9 & 10.  They require more discussion moving to the 2013-14 cycle if they are to remain.
  •
  • Consistency will need to be addressed when reviewers rate “is the applicant a junior faculty member”. This concern was met by the committee evaluating how that item was scored and making a committee consensus score for each proposal.
  •
  • A “consensus rating” was given by using the evaluation scores completed by individual raters, addressing reviewer comments, and taking into consideration the last item score “Does this proposal merit funding?” After discussion, The Committee ranked the proposals from 3-5, 5 being the highest score a proposal could earn. Proposals scoring less than 3 were not considered for funding, thus did not receive a consensus rating.
  •
  • In a report to Provost Workman, The Committee wrote:
  • The Research Committee strongly recommends that all proposals receiving a consensus score of  ≥ 4.5 be funded (n = 24, 42% of submitted proposals). If the budget permits, The Committee would like you to consider funding an additional 6 proposals that received a consensus score of 4.0. (totaling: n=30, 53% of submitted proposals).
