I. Withdrawal after the deadline and WP/WF grades

The established withdrawal late occurs late in the semester. If students wish to withdraw after that date, then they petition for permission to do so. If the petition is granted, faculty members are supposed to assign a withdrawal grade based on the student’s performance in the class up to the date of withdrawal. However, because the “WF” grade has the same impact on the student’s cumulative average as an “F,” some members of the faculty hesitate to assign the “WF.” The discussion at this time focused on the question whether to abolish the WP/WF designation and use a simple W that would not have ramifications for the student’s cumulative average. The consensus of the Committee was not to recommend any change at this time.

II. Reinstatement

The discussion about reinstatement was tabled until Vicky Buonomo could be in attendance and clarify specifics about this issue.

III. Course Shopping

The student practice of “course shopping” is problematic because early enrollment numbers give a false sense of enrollment to the institution and because students who legitimately need seats in certain courses could be blocked from enrollment by students who had enrolled but who hadn’t decided whether to complete the course. At UNF, seat availability is less an issue in some content areas than in others.

The Committee decided to request enrollment data from a period of time in order to examine the possibility of “course shopping” occurring and being a problem on campus. Marcia will contact Vicky Buonomo and ask for up to five years of response to these two questions: How many total classes were offered each semester during the time frame? How many classes had wait lists at the end of the drop/add period each semester during the time frame?
