The Honors Program has eliminated one-hour service learning courses from its requirements. These courses are being replaced with three hour courses that include a community-based component offered by departmental faculty within the various academic disciplines at the University. These new courses will be offered as special topics courses within the Honors curriculum since they are likely to change every semester or they will be Honors sections of regular courses that are taught by departmental faculty and are therefore already in the catalog under the academic departments' course offerings.

The Honors Program has eliminated the one-hour Honors Portfolio course from its requirements. This requirement is being replaced with the Honors capstone requirement. The Honors capstone does not need its own course number because the experiences and activities that will fulfill the Honors capstone requirement are too diverse for one course number. They will often be offered as directed independent studies courses or practicum courses in the various disciplines across campus. The ones that are not offered within the disciplines can be offered as special topics, research, or internship courses within the Honors Program's existing course offerings.

This course has previously been offered in the Honors Program for one credit hour.  The requested change is to increase the credit hours to three. Previously, the course met for one hour per week on campus, and the majority of the class took place in community-based settings.  The community-based component of the course will continue, but more academic material relating to the economic, social, and cultural dimensions of inner city life will be added.  The class time on campus will be increased to be consistent with other three hour courses. The course description and the course objectives have changed to reflect this new emphasis.
New Course Description:
The Nike/Jaguars Foundation Community Scholars Program is a partnership between the Jaguars Foundation and the UNF Honors Program that has existed since 1998. Students in this class serve as mentors to at-risk high school students selected by community organizations that participate in the "Honor Rows" program sponsored by the Jaguars Foundation. In addition to tutoring their mentees once a week and participating in other activities with their mentees throughout the semester, students engage in coursework that addresses the social, economic and cultural dimensions of inner city life.

Summary of the Changes:
The Honors Program is changing the requirements to receive University and Baccalaureate Honors on
a student's undergraduate transcript and diploma. This is necessary because the Honors Program was suffering from declining enrollments and a poor retention rate. These changes will allow the Honors Program to increase the flexibility of the program and make it more relevant and valuable to students majoring in all disciplines throughout the University. Students will be able to take Honors classes throughout their undergraduate careers. This is especially beneficial to transfer students and other students who enter the program after their first year. The new requirements are shown below.
To graduate with Honors, students must complete:
A minimum of 15 hours of Honors credits for University Honors.
A Minimum of 30 hours of Honors credit for Baccalaureate Honors.
Obtain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 at the time of graduation.
In addition to meeting the minimum hours and GPA requirement for Honors distinction, students must also complete a capstone experience. Capstone Experiences:  Students may continue to take Honors courses throughout their four years of college, but in addition, there will now be several ways to complete the Honors capstone requirement in the last two years of the student's program.  These include
• Honors in the Major (the traditional research thesis or creative project)
• A Community Based Learning Project
• A Study Abroad Experience
• An Electronic Portfolio of Significant Work Completed as an Undergraduate
• Completion of the Leadership Certificate offered by UNF’s Institute for Values, Community and Leadership
• Any other project or experience that a student proposes as long as it is accepted by the Honors Council Students must complete a form that requests approval of their capstone experience at the end of their second year in the Honors program and before undertaking their capstone experience.
