The committee began the 2005/2006 year with a discussion of the Summer Teaching Grant review process. Consensus was to pursue the reviews in much the same way as last year, dividing the work among Committee members and outside reviewers solicited by Committee members. This process proved to be effective resulting in submission completed reviews by the November deadline. 20 applications were reviewed and 8 grants awarded.
The committee members voiced their to assist Jace Hargis in defining faculty needs and desires in terms of OFE/CIRT programming, and help stimulate attendance at events. The committee members sought feedback from within their colleges and discussed results of the faculty needs assessment survey administered last spring that provided responses from 113 faculty members. FEC members committed to work at the college level to improve attendance at FEC events.
The committed also discussed the committee makeup and voted to request an amendment to the Bylaws to add an additional COAS member, to better represent the needs of the large, diverse COAS faculty. The requested amendment was submitted to the Executive Committee and subsequently to the faculty association where it was adopted by unanimous vote.
The distance learning lab located in the Engineering Building was cited as a resource available to faculty. The committee members expressed an interest in visiting the lab and Jace Hargis contacted the engineering department to schedule the next committee meeting in the FEEDS classroom. At that meeting committee members were provided an introduction to the resources available through the classroom and the Feeds recording studio.
The committee also voted to amend the Bylaws to allow committee members to apply for the summer teaching grants. This would reflect similar opportunities available for Research Committee members in regard to application for the Summer Research Grants.
This second Bylaws amendment was approved by the faculty association.
The Florida Faculty Development Consortium held their biannual meeting at UNF on March 9, 2005. This group is made up of the Directors of Faculty Enhancement offices from Florida’s public and private colleges and universities.
The BUILD course development seminar was held May 1-3. Six faculty members participated in a program designed to introduce faculty to potential use of an IPOD as a course enhancement tool.
The need for additional resources to meet the needs of a growing faculty and an increasingly complex technological environment was acknowledged by all. Committee efforts will be directed toward securing administration support for increased funding for faculty enhancement activities.
