Actions Taken:

The Committee met on November 4, 2005, at noon in Building 50, Room 3022. Chair Mina Baliamoune-Lutz called the meeting to order. Mina asked Reinhold Lamb to pass out the Research Grants evaluation results and to give an overview of the rating process. Reinhold explained that he compiled results from all reviewers, and calculated an average ranking for each applicant. Results were sorted by rank and by college. Mina explained that the Committee will send their recommendations to Acting Provost Mark Workman. The final decision on awarding grants will be made by Academic Affairs. Mina does not know how much money is available, but funding will be used for both research and teaching grants. As with last year’s awards, the Provost wants to include projects submitted by new faculty.

The Committee discussed the results and methodology. David Lamb gave a synopsis of how the Committee submitted its recommendation last year. After much discussion, the Committee decided to recommend the top 20 out of the 38 proposals. Mina will compile the letter and send it to Dr. Workman. She will submit the list in rank order and give name and department. She will identify faculty who have been hired in the past two years.

David Lambert announced that there are two interviews for the Assistant Academic Vice-President for Research:

Steven Rice
Nov. 7

Joe Bragin

Nov. 14

The Research Committee is encouraged to attend the interviews during the 10:00-10:30 time slot. Julia Watkins announced that this is her last meeting, as Michele Moore will be returning from maternity leave.

The Committee will not meet in December, but plans to meet in January. Time and place will be announced after the semester starts.

The meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Vicki Stanton
Secretary
