12:15 PM @ FAMA
Members present:

Guest:

Tom Serwatka

Absent:

Lucy Trice, David Courtwright, Jeanne Patterson

The first order of business was to elect a chairperson for 2005/06. Pat Plumlee was nominated and he agreed to serve, with the caveat that he may be involved with departmental accreditation activities in the spring.

In light of the fact that there is no union contract, Judy commented that the Faculty Affairs Committee should continue business as usual, even if issues come up having to do with terms and conditions of employment. If matters are important to the faculty, we can forward our position to Faculty Association.

Tom Serwatka nominated Bishop Desmond Tutu for an honorary degree to be awarded in November when the Bishop will be in this country. UNF will fly him down for the ceremony, which will include a reception/conversation event with President Delaney in the Fine Arts Center. Tom included a letter of nomination and biographical sketch with his request. Steve moved for approval, and it was unanimously accepted. As Faculty Association president, Judy will send a letter to the President with the committee’s action.

There was discussion about the draft University Ethics Statement. Tom gave the background to it. The state auditors suggested that the university collect into one place ethics statements. President Delaney has sent the draft to the three constituent associations for comment. This committee will review it and consider it at our next meeting. The president’s office plans to have an open hearing on it for the entire university.

Discussion about faculty scheduling exams during the week before final exam week, which is contrary to policy. Committee discussed ways to inform and enforce this policy. The group also discussed ways to improve information sharing for new faculty orientation. We decided to publicize no exam policy, and to approach Academic Affairs about working together on new faculty orientation.

Judy brought up the issue of faculty requiring students to buy their materials for class, and the reputability of publishers. We will discuss this at the next meeting.

Next meeting on Oct. 13, 2005 at 12:15. PM in the Faculty Association Meeting Area
