MINUTES OF MEETING
ADJUNCT AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
Wednesday, March 15, 2006
2:00 PM @ 11/1327
Call to Order:

Lee Richardson called the meeting to order at 2:00.

Members Present:

Chris Gabbard, Nancy Levine, Karen Patterson, Lee Richardson

Members Absent:

Mike Jackson, Christopher Johnson, Julia Watkins

Approval of Minutes:

The minutes from the February 2006 meeting were approved as distributed via email.

I.
Old Business:

Nancy and Chris gave a brief summary of their visit to a dean’s meeting February 24. Mark Workman provided background information at the meeting to explain why Adjunct Affairs wanted to address teaching feedback for adjuncts. Nancy then presented the results of the committee’s survey on teaching feedback. Dr. Workman asked for a copy of the survey results so he could send them to chairs and deans. Nancy sent the results to Dr. Workman after the meeting. She also asked the deans to request that their department chairs submit adjunct or part-time faculty handbooks to Jace Hargis to add to the adjunct resources Web page. No one has checked the Web page yet to see if any handbooks have been added, but Lee offered to check.

Nancy and Chris agreed the meeting was positive and the deans seemed receptive to the information they presented.

II.
New Business:

Lee has e-mailed Mark Workman to find out about the progress on awards and recognitions for adjuncts, but has not received a response.

Lee queried the group to find out how many people will be available for committee work during the summer. There will probably be very few committee members available during the summer, so April will be the last meeting until the fall.

Several other issues were discussed. It appears that some adjuncts are not well informed about who to contact when they have a problem. It was suggested that the committee should regularly attend meetings to keep deans, chairs, and other faculty informed of adjunct issues. Nancy suggested regularly attending meetings with deans and chairs to remind them of ongoing adjunct concerns and to bring up new issues. Karen suggested also using Faculty Association meetings to keep faculty informed.

Chris asked about the number of adjuncts on campus. No one knew for sure, but Lee suggested the number was in the range of 300-400. The group also discussed new faculty orientations and whether or not adjuncts could or did attend. Chris pointed out that there is a lot of general information on adjuncts we don’t have. Lee will investigate where to find this information.

III.
Adjournment & Next Meeting:

The meeting adjourned at 2:35. The next meeting will be April 19, 2006, 2:00 p.m. in the FAMA.
