MINUTES OF MEETING
ACADEMIC STANDARDS COMMITTEE
Monday, January 23, 2006
3:00 PM @ 39/2027
Members Present:
Jack Cummings, Barbara Kruger, Diane Tanner, and Lisa Jamba
Members Absent:
John Woolschlager, Otilia Salmon (on leave of absence) and Richard Patterson

The Committee was informed that Dr. Salmon has taken a leave of absence for the remainder of the academic year. Dr. Solano has informed the Chair that Dr. Salmon will not be replaced and that the Dr. Salmon’s absence will not count against the number required for a quorum.

The Committee met to discuss the University Academic Appeals Committee Bylaws and the process for appealing an academic decision. The Committee reviewed and discussed the following documents in detail: 1) The Academic Integrity Code including violations of the Code; 2) the University procedure for appealing an academic decision; and 3) the University Academic Appeals Committee Bylaws.

The discussion reviewed in detail current University policies for appealing an academic decision. Ms. Tanner volunteered to develop a rough draft of an updated procedure for appealing an academic procedure incorporating changes discussed today.

The Committee decided to invite Ms. Connie Corker to the next Committee meeting to discuss the current appeals process from the perspective of the University Academic Appeals Committee. Jack Cummings will extend the invitation to Ms. Corker.

Ms. Jamba recalled that several years ago the Academic Standards Committee had been asked to identify a list of items that could not be petitioned as part of the appeals process. Ms. Jamba volunteered to contact Dr. Chip Klostermeyer in an attempt to obtain a copy of the list either from Dr. Klostermeyer or through the Faculty Association.

Adjournment & Next Meeting:

The meeting was adjourned at 3:55 pm with the next meeting scheduled for February 13, 2006.

Respectfully submitted,
