The chair announced that Valerie Spitler has resigned her position on the committee. Dr. Rao will consult with the president of Faculty Association about a replacement.
Karen Reedy of the Academic Center for Excellence, briefed the committee on some of the activities and responsibilities of the Center. They have a total staff of 57, many of whom are masters qualified in an academic specialty. Many of the tutors/mentors are part time OPS employees of the University. Some are adjuncts here at UNF.
The Academic Center for Excellence provides tutoring, academic advising to freshmen and sophomores, mentoring, help with study skills, note taking, test taking and other academic support. Last year the Center logged 28,000 visits from students during the year. They are providing review classes for the large core classes. They also help and monitor the students in the Academic Potential Program. These are summer students who have potential to excel at UNF but lack academic skill.
The Center provides for supplemental institutional students. These are enrolled students who are paid to take a class. They attend the class and then meet with their classmates to help them with any problems they are having related to the class.
Ms. Reedy distributed brochures to the committee members which outlined the programs available at the Center. She also fielded several questions from the Faculty and encouraged us to drop by to see the Center in action.
Dawn Boatman of Sponsored Research will be the guest at the next meeting.
Dr. Rao requested that everyone send their next semester's schedule to him so that he can find the best meeting time for everyone.
Meeting adjourned at 2:20 p.m.
