RESEARCH COMMITTEE
Annual Report
2004-2005
The Research Committee's primary responsibility has traditionally been to conduct a formal review of the Summer Scholarship Grant application submissions and then provide Academic Affairs with a ranked list of potential award recipients. In the Spring of 2004, the Committee had focused on a major revision to the Grant Application forms and guidelines. This year, the Committee also updated the evaluation forms and the scoring method used by the reviewers. |

41 Summer Scholarship Grant applications were submitted in the Fall of 2004 for the Summer 2005 awards. Three faculty members who were either members of the Research Committee or were outside volunteer reviewers reviewed each application. Each Committee member selected proposals to assign to the reviewers whom they recruited from their respective departments. Over 40 faculty members participated in the review process. The three reviewers' scores were averaged and ranked and then the committee reviewed the applications that received close scores. |

At the Fall 2004 New Faculty Orientation, the Provost announced to our new faculty members that Academic Affairs would fund four Summer Scholarship Grants for new faculty (that arrived in either fall 2003 or fall 2004) in addition to the ten Summer 2005 grants already made available. The Research Committee worked with Academic Affairs to update the Committee’s traditional review process to include these “new faculty” awards. It was determined that the Committee would review ALL grant applications together, and through their standard ranking, the first ten applications would be recommended for an award as in the past, and then the next four grants recommended for an award would be chosen from the next ranked new(er) faculty members. It is interesting to note that several new faculty members were ranked in the top ten, thus, more than 4 new faculty members were recommended for awards. A final ranked list was provided to Academic Affairs as the Committee’s recommendations for award recipients. |

| David Lambert, Chair, served on the Search Committee for the Associate Provost of Research and Graduate Studies representing the Research Committee. Committee members attended interview sessions for the four candidates for the position and formulated recommendations on the candidates which were forwarded to the Provost. |
