Actions Taken:

The Minutes of the August 30, 2004 meeting were approved.

Discussion of the Grant Evaluation Guidelines resulted in several changes:

Change "College" to "Department" in the Reviewer identification line.

  Omit "Reviewer's Email" line.

Omit the section asking if the applicant received a previous summer grant and if the final report was submitted by the deadline.

Replace the first seven questions with the following three questions:

1. The author effectively communicates the significance of the proposed study.
2. The proposal is clearly organized and written.
3. Based on the comments from the Department Chair and your own evaluation of the proposal, and understanding that about fourteen proposals will be funded, this proposal should be funded.
The evaluation by the reviewer will involve a 1 - 5 scale where 1 represents Strongly Disagree and 5 represents Strongly Agree.

The Committee Chair will email the Department Chairs to address the following issues of each proposal submitted by faculty from the respective Departments:

1. Timeliness of proposed work to current directions in the academic discipline
2. Belief that the project will be successfully completed based on the applicants past record
3. Degree to which the proposed research supports the Institution's mission, goals and objectives
4. Compliance of the proposed research to the guidelines of scholarly research (creative activities) as outlined in the Faculty Handbook

Reinhold Lamb agreed to incorporate the changes in the Grant Evaluation Guidelines and distribute them to the Committee for further discussion via email.
