During the August 2004 meeting, the Committee discussed with Marianne Jaffee Dr.Giordano's proposal to fund four additional research grants for new faculty hired in 2003 or 2004 at the assistant professor level. It was agreed that the Committee would review the applications for the new faculty grants along with the other applications for the Summer Scholarship Grants, select the recipients for new faculty grants from the top of the ranked submissions and request that they be funded by the new grants. During the November meeting, David Lambert phoned Marianne Jaffee to confirm the criteria for eligibility for new faculty grants and was told that faculty members who were hired in 2003 or 2004 are eligible regardless of graduation date.
Reinhold Lamb asked if the Committee views writing based on research already done as a valid project for a Summer Scholarship Grant. The Committee discussed the types of projects that should be funded and noted that there are no explicit guidelines for determining the appropriateness of proposed project activity.
The Committee decided to submit to Academic Affairs the names of the applicants with the top ten highest scores without regard to " new" or "old faculty" status along with the next four highest who qualified as "new faculty". Because the scores for the next five were very close, the Committee decided to recommend that all fifteen be funded. A motion to submit fifteen names was made by Adam Shapiro and seconded by Reinhold Lamb.
David Lambert announced that he is on the Search Committee for the Associate Provost of Research and Graduate Studies, the position left vacant by Jim Collom. He will keep the Committee informed of meetings and interview sessions that may be of interest.
The next meeting has not been scheduled. |
