| Provost Giordano addressed the group, thanking them for their work to advise the OFE/CIRT. He also remarked on the many contributions OFE/CIRT makes to the campus, and the high degree of appreciation that faculty express for its services. He also passed along a suggestion from Adjunct and Part-Time faculty that a Faculty Fellow be assigned to advise on the distinctive challenges facing Part-Time faculty. |

Summer Teaching Grant Procedures: We discussed the procedure for reviewing the summer teaching grant with Marianne Jaffe, who administers the program for Academic Affairs. Several suggestions were made regarding the application process, including clarifying the criteria used in evaluating the proposals (e.g. innovation and creativity), requiring awardees to participate in the spring teaching conference, encouraging potential applicants to attend the spring teaching conference, creating a one-year hiatus for grant recipients (that is, successful recipients must wait a year before applying again), and shifting responsibility for application review to a new committee. The last topic received a great deal of attention. The consensus of the FEC is that we move toward having an ad-hoc advisory committee review the applications and report back to the FEC. Due to election requirements, this committee would likely not be in place until 2006-7, and the current method of assessing applications will continue in 2005-6.
Needs Assessment: Preliminary results from the web-based needs assessment survey are now available. These suggest a need for more training in assessment. Results form the paper forms will be entered soon. Jace Hargis will send a reminder to the faculty to complete their surveys, and continue collecting them through the end of the semester. |

Issues Regarding Space in Building 10: The Division of Sponsored Research and Training will be leaving their space in Building 10 in December. The Center for Professional Development and Training has indicated an interest in using the space. Chair Mays has suggested that we consider what uses the OFE might make of the space, and whether the space should continue to be used for faculty development. Two suggestions for use of the space include a drop-off service for processing of instructional materials, to be used in conjunction with OFE/CIRT services, and a space for assessment related activities (Associate Provost Smallwood should be consulted on this). FEC members should consider contacting Dan Cox or George Perkins, both members of the Space Committee, to express their views on the issue.
Director's Report and Announcements: Hargis announced that applicants for the BUILD seminar (May 16-18) have been accepted. Applications for faculty fellows will be accepted until may 20. OFE/CIRT is working on a new “podcasting” experiment that will include faculty sharing their stories on teaching and learning. The budget for next year has been submitted, asking for permanent funding for the Instructional Designer position now occupied by Erin Soles. A crew from the CBS Early Show will be on campus to film prior to the class conducted on Amtrak. |
