Needs Assessment
A draft of the needs assessment instrument was presented for review and discussion. Some changes were suggested, including an item regarding distance/hybrid learning, wording the open-ended questions to ask what respondents would like to see offered, and adding a section at the end asking for feedback and suggestions regarding career development. Committee members universally appreciated the instrument's brevity and clarity. A corrected version will be forwarded to OFE for paper and web distribution.

Summer Teaching Grant Procedures
Chair Mays met with Marianne Jaffee (Academic Affairs) to discuss changes in the application and review process for Summer Teaching grants. These included suggestions such as clarifying and defining the criteria by which applications will be evaluated, asking recipients to wait one year before re-applying, and having the FEC "coordinate" (rather than conduct) the review process. Ms. Jaffee was supportive of changes the committee might suggest. She and Provost Giordano will join the FEC at the April 18 meeting. The Committee will then suggest having a separate committee that includes former recipients review the Summer Teaching Grants. Chair Mays has volunteered to head this committee, as his term on the FEC will expire at year-end.

---- Director's Report and Announcements
Hargis announced that applications for the BUILD seminar (May 16-18) are due April 4; several have been received already. Applications are also being accepted for the 2005-6 Faculty Fellows program; these are due mid-May. The Summer Teaching grant conference was successful; seven of eight recipients attended and a productive discussion ensued. The OFE/CIRT newsletter was distributed via email. The Committee suggested also distributing a brief paper version for those who may not engage with email announcements. Finally, Hargis solicited responses to holding a BUILD or similar workshop on Amtrak (akin to the student trip he is leading this spring). The Committee was enthusiastic about this, and Hargis will consider it further. The Committee also suggested he look into the possibility of a trip abroad for faculty development.

The committee will meet next on April 18, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in the Office of Faculty Enhancement Conference Room .

Meeting adjourned at 10:50 a.m.
