Plagiarism – from Academic Standards
At the request of Academic Standards Committee, CTC discussed the feasibility of putting together an instructional module for plagiarism and testing incoming students. Kathy Hassell provided several links to tutorials available. Deb Miller offered a link for Purdue. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_plagiar.html .
The committee agreed with Kathy Hassell’s and the ASC’s view that using a product such as Turnitin.com was somewhat of a ‘trap’ to catch students, and that students would change whatever necessary to get Turnitin to accept it. In other words, tools such as these could teach students how to plagiarize and get away with it. The committee felt that Kathy Hassell’s and ASC’s suggestions of integrating a learning component into the curriculum would be a better option to teach students what plagiarism is and how to properly cite a source. ASC recommended a tutorial based component to a required course that counted as part of the student’s grade. For freshman, the intro English classes would work well, but there are over 50% of juniors and seniors that are not native UNF students that would miss this component. Our committee suggested that each major select one course and include a required plagiarism teaching unit with a quiz that counted as part of the course grade. CIRT could compile a pool of questions of which faculty could select ten or so to test students in the BlackBoard environment. The committee felt that the student’s first semester would be the best timing. Perhaps Kathy Hassell’s department would like to develop these questions. Possible roadblocks include: How do we convince departments to incorporate into the curriculum at the junior and graduate level? How do we track and who will track whether students have completed this? (A suggestion was made that Bob Smallwood’s office would be a source for this.) If it is required in the first term at UNF, what penalty do students have that do not complete in their first term? Since CTC’s role was to figure out a technology solution to educate students, the issue is being sent back to ASC to develop an agenda item for faculty association.

Will invite Lance Taylor to present on Lambda Rail/Internet 2 (Research Committee will be invited to join us.)
