Jim Collom reviewed with the committee how he has been referencing the survey results with administrators on campus, particularly related to discussions about more funding for sponsored research.  Jim discussed faculty’s need for more time and less service, and shared individual faculty responses to question 19 “What can UNF do to foster research?”

The committee agreed that in order to get maximum benefit we need to pull out individual comments. 

Cindy Nyquist-Battie talked about differences in needs across disciplines (e.g., the sciences need more space). 

Cindy Nyquist-Battie volunteered to work with Cheryl Van Deusen to write a draft of the research report. 

Jim also did comparisons of outside funding across the Florida SUS.  UNF is almost always at the bottom, and also receives the least state funding.  This number is what the state uses for enhancement funds, and UNF did not receive any enhancement funds this past year. 

Related to external funding, Jim related that in the 2 years external funding received was about  $5million.  This past year it was $7.3million, up $2.3millioin.  He thinks UNF should aspire to achieving $12-14 million/year.  He will get a summary of this information to the Research Committee. 

The committee discussed possible times to meet.  It seems that either Tuesday at 11 or Thursday at 3 are options.  We will decide at a future time. 

For the next meeting we will elect a Chair, Vice-chair, and Secretary for this academic year, and set meeting dates for the year as well.
