New Business

Sarah Philips and Barbara Tuck discussed new services and initiatives in the library.

Sarah talked about the Library Liaison/Faculty Representative program introduced in September 2009.  Librarians are partnering with faculty in university departments to develop a systematic and sustainable method of developing library collections. Here is information about the program.  Liaisons are happy to attend department or group meetings to talk about collections, faculty requests, and new services and research databases and tools.   Attached is a list of departments and liaisons.

The library is working with the Department of Construction Management to publish a peer-reviewed open-access journal using BePress – Berkeley Electronic Press.  BePress is also being considered as an institutional repository that could be used numerous ways by the UNF community.  Here is information about BePress.

Barbara talked about the growing art collection in the library.  An initiative by Dean Shirley Hallblade has resulted in donations of many artworks. She recommended a trip the third floor of the library to view the collection that is beginning to spread throughout the library. There will be more information about this in an upcoming issue of Au Courant, the library faculty newsletter.

Barbara and Sarah reported on the thriving library instruction program headed by Jim Alderman.  Librarians work with faculty to tailor classes specifically for their students. During 2009-2010, the library conducted 196 sessions with 4,774 students.

Eileen Brady in Special Collections is actively pursuing and adding valuable new collections.  One that Sarah mentioned is the Lawrence V. Smith Photography collection.
The library is now a member of a group of 174 libraries whose purpose is to speed up Interlibrary Loan of journal articles.  It's called RapidILL. The process is completely automated.  If the citation is complete and correct, articles should arrive within 24 to 48 hours.

uBorrow is a new service that will begin in January. This will let borrowers initiate an interlibrary loan request straight from the SUL Union Catalog by simply selecting an icon beside the book.  The request is immediately submitted and the item will be sent.  There will be more information about this in an upcoming Au Courant library update.

The library’s Events and Programs Committee is organizing interesting presentations.
On November 10, Dr. Michael Wiley of the English department will discuss his 2008 book on the formation of migrant (emigrant and immigrant) identities in late
eighteenth-century British literature.  The Committee invites UNF faculty to partner in a presentation.

Committee meetings are scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m.
in Bldg. 57/3510.  The committee will have a speaker, to be announced, at the next meeting.

III.
Adjournment & Next Meeting:

The meeting adjourned at 1:45 pm.

Susan will notify the committee members of the next meeting date.  It will be in Bldg 57,
Room 3510.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Tuck
