M-Computing Capstone Project I |
We are requesting to change this course to include topics related to the development of computer games. This change will allow us to offer more options to our students and will potentially help increase
enrollment in our program.
The requested changes are:
- New name: “Gaming and Mobile Apps Capstone I”
- New course description, and learning outcomes (as articulated in this form). |
| New Course Description: |
This is the first of a sequence of two courses where students will have the opportunity to analyze,
implement, and deploy complex software systems as enterprise mobile applications, as computer games, and as an appropriate combination of both. |

Development of Mobile Software Applications |
We are requesting to change this course to include topics related to the development of computer games. This change will allow us to offer more options to our students and will potentially help increase
enrollment in our program. The requested changes are:
- New name: "Development of Gaming and Mobile Applications"
- New course description, learning outcomes, methods of evaluation, and proposed textbook/journals
(as articulated in this form). |
New Course Description: |
This course covers various approaches to the development of computer games and mobile software
applications using current development environments, frameworks, and game engines. Examples of
mobile approaches include, but are not limited to, "thin" clients and "smart" clients, which interact with servers implemented as enterprise systems or web services. Examples of game development approaches include, but are not limited to, the use of various modelers, Artificial Intelligence techniques, Physics engines, and realistic Computer Graphics renderers. Development environments and platforms include open-source and commercial. Laboratories consist of small programming assignments that are demonstrated through simulators of mobile devices, the deployment to mobile devices, and the development of computer games and their elements. |

Summary of the Changes:
We are requesting to modify three of the courses of our Concentration in Mobile Computing (CEN 4535C, CIS 4593, and CIS 4594), as per the attached AP2 forms. These changes will allow us to offer more options to our students and will potentially help increase enrollment in our program.
We are also requesting to change the name of the concentration to: "Gaming and Mobile Applications"
to better reflect the updated contents.

Subject: Resources Statement for APC Forms 09/10-201 to 09/10-204
In relation to APC forms 09/10-201 to 09/10-204 from the School of Computing, let me assure the APC Committee and the academic community that:
(1) No new faculty/personnel are needed, since this is a concentration which already exists and we are simply proposing a modification.
(2) We are establishing a game development environment (software) which will be used by students
pursuing this concentration. The cost of the software license will be borne by the School of Computing's Software Endowment Fund (Foundation account).
(3) Additional space and computing equipment are not required, as we propose using one of our existing teaching labs (15/3126).
(4) We are in the process of requesting the acquisition of books by the Library to support this
concentration (Contact: Mr. Michael Kucsak, Director of Library Systems and Technology).
