Average Faculty Salaries versus Average Administrator Salaries
1999-2000 through 2008-2009

Based on the May 2009 document titled “How Has UNF Invested Its Money? Expenditures on Faculty and Administration”, we perform some calculations to evaluate the growth of the average Faculty salary compared to both the average Administrator and average Chairperson’s salary growth.  We supplemented the May 2009 document with information for the Chairs and Directors’ salaries for the same time period to isolate both the chairs’ and faculty salaries paid by the university (which was not possible directly from the May 2009 document).

Graph 1 and Table 1 show that in 1999-2000 the average Faculty salary was 48,139 dollars, while the average Administrator salary was 95,897. By 2008-2009 the average Faculty salary was 70,333, while the average administrator salary was 136,358. While in 1999-2000 the ratio of average administrator to faculty salary was 1.99, by 2008-2009 this ratio increased to 2.21. If we compare the average Faculty salary with the Chairs and Directors’ salaries, the ratio was 1.46 in 1999-2000, and it increased to 1.77 in 2008-2009. Graph 1 shows the evolution of the average salaries for these three categories, while table 1 shows the numbers and respective calculations.

What is even more revealing is the increase of average Faculty salary compared to the average Administrator salary. From the academic year 2003/2004 to the academic year 2008-2009 the average Faculty salary increased 3.3%, or an annualized rate of 0.66%. This annual growth rate is much lower than the average annual inflation rate of 3.69%. On the other hand, the average Administrator salary increased 23.1%, or an annualized rate of 4.24%, while Chairs’ average salary increased 33.7%, or an annualized rate of 5.99%. That means that, for this period, the average Administrator salary increased 6.88 times the average Faculty salary increase, and the average Chairs’ salary growth rate was 10.08 times the faculty rate. Graph 2 and Table 2 summarize these findings. It is interesting to notice that average faculty salaries increased at very similar rates to administrators prior to 2003-04.  For statistical accuracy, however, it needs to be pointed out that the limited number of upper administrators and chairs and directors can skew the findings due to small sample bias, and chairs were converted from 11/9 to 12/9 in 2006-07 to improve retention and recruitment of chairs.

Conclusion

Average Faculty salaries have grown less than inflation in the last five academic years. They are growing at a much lower rate than the average Administrator and Chair salary. As a consequence, the difference between Faculty and Administrators and Chairs’ salaries is increasing over time.  The reader should note that this is despite the realization that it takes fewer dollars to generate the same percentage increase for most faculty members relative to administrators.

Appendix: Correcting for Annual Salaries

We are not certain if the amount of faculty salaries corresponds to annual salaries or 9 month salaries. In the previous analysis we assumed that the information provided corresponds to annual salaries. However, if the information corresponds to nine month salaries, this appendix shows the corrections to our tables and figures. Our main conclusions regarding growth rates and divergence of average salaries between administrators and chairs and faculty members are sustained.
