The focus of this course is on the development of advanced nursing knowledge
in a specialized area of practice. This course provides an opportunity
for the learner to identify and explore acute and chronic health problems
in an area of concentrated study: Adult Health; Child Health; Community
Health; Geriatric Health; Mental Health; or Women's Health. The course
will involve learners in the identification of the area of concentrated
study and the planning, implementation, and evaluation of a personal learning
plan for increasing knowledge and skills in this area. Learners will apply
their advanced knowledge and skills in the clinical area.

The focus of this course is the integration of assessment, concentrated

The capstone for the course will be the implementation and evaluation
of the strategies acquired for practice as a nurse educator.

nursing education settings will be explored. The learner will be involved
in teaching in nursing classroom and clinical settings.

on health promotion and disease prevention. The learner will be involved
in health promotion and disease prevention activities for culturally diverse
clients.

This request is to change the pre-co-requisites and to change the description.
Changes in the course description and course objectives are being made
in order to describe more clearly the focus of the course and to offer
a more comprehensive approach to the content area. This is needed to include
the new group of students due to the expansion of the program.

New Description: The focus of the course is the theoretical basis of
the current status of advanced nursing practice. Legal, ethical, cultural,
social, political and economic problems related to advanced practice
for primary care nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists
will be examined.

MSN: Nursing: Clinical Nurse Specialist track |
Add a new track to the MSN program. This track would prepare nurses at
the graduate level to teach nursing to nursing students at the University
level or teach nurses and/or patients in the clinical or community settings.
This track is an extension of the current MSN program. It will prepare
graduates to function as clinical nurse specialists and have a subspecialty
in nursing education. Clinical nurse specialists are prepared to function
as faculty in schools of nursing, educators in healthcare facilities,
patient educators and community educators.

This request is to change the minor offered by the Department of Public
Health by changing the name from Health Science to Public Health and decreasing
the required hours from 18 to 15. Required core courses will include HSC
3500 Epidemiology and HSA 4111 US Health Care Systems. The student will
then choose three additional 3000-4000 Public Health courses related to
his/her individual interest area with permission of a college advisor.
The name change reflects the department name change approved by the Faculty
Association in 2002. The required core courses are fundamental to a basic
understanding of health. The additional flexibility in course selection
will meet individual student interests.

The purpose of this course is to examine educational planning and program

practice assignments related to mental and emotional health education
in public health.

This course is a study of issues related to the prevention continuum,
including primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Substance use,
misuse, abuse, and dependency, as well as violence are addressed. The
focus of the course is the application of substance abuse/dependence and
violence prevention programs in a variety of settings. Students are required
to complete research, writing, and practice assignments related to drug
abuse and violence prevention education in public health.

Sexuality Education (3 credits) |

This course provides an overview of physiological, psychological, and
sociological aspects of human sexuality throughout the lifespan including
gender, family life, relationships, reproduction sexual behavior, STDs/HIV,
safer sex, and sexual coercion. Planning, implementing and evaluating
community sexuality education programs are included in the course. Policy
issues that affect sexuality education are also addressed. Students are
required to complete research, writing, and practice assignments related
to sexuality education in public health.

A new course title and course description are being suggested to clarify
the course content. It is being requested to change the course name from
Human Health Behaviors to Theory of Health Behavior and to change the
course description.
New Description: An exploration of the theoretical and conceptual models
and factors underlying public health behavior and health promotion programs,
and their application in planning, implementing, and evaluating public
health programs for behavioral change.

faculty believe that all MPH students should take HSC 6735 Health Science
Research. Inclusion in the core emphasizes the importance of this knowledge
for students in all tracks. The course content of HSC 6603 is being changed
to clarify content.

credits) with HSC 6912 Projects (3 credits). The faculty believe that
all MPH students should take HSC 6735 HEALTH SCIENCE RESEARCH. Inclusion
in the core emphasizes the importance of this knowledge for students in
all tracks. The course description and title of HSC 6603 are being changed
to clarify course content. The faculty have decided that Thesis is not
appropriate for 3 hours credit. This change is consistent with changes
approved for other MPH tracks.

of HSC 6603. Note: An APC-2 form has been submitted related the change
requested in HSC 6603; (4) change the program structure to Public Health
Core, Foundations of community Health Education, Public Health Electives,
and Field work, and delete sections for "tools" and intervention;
(5) place HSC 6706 Grantsmanship and HSC 6716 Health Program Evaluation
in "Foundations;" (6) delete PHC 6412 Culture and Health from
"foundations;" (7) add three new courses in "Sexuality
Education," "Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention Education,"
and "Mental and Emotional Health Education;" and (8) add an
"electives" section to the program.
