The Faculty Affairs Committee has been considering the possibility
of augmenting the eight-question State University System Student
Assessment of Instruction (SUSSAI) instrument. The intent would
be to add questions designed to provide for a better and more
comprehensive indication of student opinion. It has been proposed
that we adopt the 15-question instrument developed by the College
of Business.
The procedure used by COBA to develop their instrument, essentially
included five steps:
1. Conducted focus groups of students to determine what was
important to the students.
2. Completed a literature review on teaching evaluations, to
determine objectives that should be evaluated.
3. Developed a set of questions that would supplement the SUSSAI
questions.
4. Pilot tested these questions on students, to fine-tune the
wording of the questions.
5. Submitted the questions to the faculty for final review and
revision.
The resulting instrument has been in use in COBA for about
a year.
Attached is a copy of the 15-question
instrument. An open hearing, for all interested in commenting
on the instrument and its use, will be scheduled for November
9, at noon, location to be announced.
