ITEM #5 -- FA 02-06: Submitted by the Faculty Affairs Committee.

line

Instructional Satisfaction Questionnaire

The Faculty Affairs Committee proposes to augment the eight-question State University System Student Assessment of Instruction (SUSSAI) instrument. The intent is to add questions designed to provide for a better and more comprehensive indication of student opinion. The Committee proposes that the Association adopt, with minor modifications, the 15-question instrument developed by the College of Business.

The procedure used by COBA to develop their instrument, essentially included five steps:

1.   Conducted focus groups of students to determine what was important to the students.
2.   Completed a literature review on teaching evaluations, to determine objectives that
      should be evaluated.
3.   Developed a set of questions that would supplement the SUSSAI questions.
4.   Pilot tested these questions on students, to fine-tune the wording of the questions.
5.   Submitted the questions to the faculty for final review and revision.

The resulting instrument has been in use in COBA for about a year.

The modifications proposed by the Committee, after an open hearing, include:

1.   Elimination of references to race and gender in question #12, on page 1.
2.   Addition of a "no response" column on page 1.
3.   Expansion of the list of degree programs on page 2, to include all UNF degree
      programs.
4.   Addition, on page 2, of a question soliciting information about classification of
respondent.

Addendum:

1. Question 4 probably should read: "Professor relates course material to current examples and      practices in the subject area."

2. The "No Response" column should now be labeled "No Response/Not Applicable."

3. In the demographic information section the degree program list needs to be expanded to include     all programs and an "undecided" choice. The classification list also needs to be expanded to     include graduate level classifications.

Attached is a copy of the proposed instrument.
