Biology Department

01-102             APC 1             ZOO 4XXX       Introduction to Canine Anatomy (4 cr hrs)
Prerequisite:  BSC 1010c, 1011c, 2020c
Corequisite:  None
In this course we will study the dog as a model of mammalian anatomy.  The course has obvious appeal to students pursuing studies in veterinary medicine, but those interested in other pre-professional fields will definitely benefit.  The emphasis will be heavily on laboratory dissections, which are held three times a week, and will be supplemented with two lectures a week.  The dissection approaches are often those taken for surgery, and many structures not located in previous courses will be found.  Students will work in groups of up to four, and, to assure that all students are actively involved, dissection duties will be rotated daily within groups.  No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

01-158             APC 1             BSC 3052            Conservation Biology (3 credit hours)
Prerequisite:  BSC 1010C, BSC 1011C, BSC 2020
Corequisite:  None
The planet is currently losing species at an astonishing rate, primarily owing to anthropogenic causes.  This loss of biological diversity hasn't been rivaled since the mass extinction that took place some 65 million years ago during the age of the dinosaurs.  In this class we will investigate the major causes of biological loss including loss of species as well as decreasing genetic diversity within various taxonomic groups.  We will also address the implications of declining biodiversity on ecosystem functions and their implications to human populations.  Lastly, the course will address legislature enacted to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss such as the Endangered Species Act and the CITES treaty.  No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

01-159             APC 1             BOT 4503        Plant Anatomy and Physiology (4 credit hours)
Prerequisite:  BSC 1010C, BSC 1011C, BSC 2020C
Corequisite:  None
Plants, which are the primary producers on the planet, are essential to virtually all ecosystems.  In this course students will investigate the anatomy, physiology and primary biochemical pathways of the major plant groups.  In addition, students will be introduced to the ecology and primary interactions of plants and their environment (including their relationships to humans).  No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

01-160           APC 1              ZOO 4823                 General Entomology (4 credit hours)
Prerequisite:  BSC 1010C, BSC 1011C, BSC 2020C
Corequisite:  None
Insects represent the most speciose group of organisms on the planet.  In this course we will investigate the classification, taxonomy, ecology and physiology of the major evolutionary branches of the insects.  In addition, we will consider the interactions between insects and other groups of organisms with a special emphasis on their relationship to humans.  No new faculty or additional resources are required for this course.

01-205              APC 3EZ                           B.S.: Biology - Biology Track
ZOO 4XXXC (Introduction to Canine Anatomy), ZOO 4823C, BOT 4503C, & BSC 3052
are added to the list of major electives within the biology track of the BS degree in Biology.

Chemistry & Physics Department

01-164                APC 2                CHM 4910                Chemical Research
This change is to delete the sentence "May be repeated for a total of 12 credit hours" and add the sentence "No more than 4 hours will count towards chemistry electives" to the course description for CHM 4910.  This corrects the catalog to reflect long-standing department policy.

01-166               APC 3                          BS:  Chemistry
This change is to add BCH 4033 Biochemistry to the Major Requirements for the BS in Chemistry.  Major Requirements will total 25 semester hours.  We want to delete BCH 4033 Biochemistry from the Major Electives for the BS in Chemistry.  Major Electives will total 11 semester hours.  These changes are necessary to meet American Chemical Society program approval requirements.
